2018 was a year we saw renewed energy in the malaria fight. Malaria No More partnered closely with the wider malaria community to mobilize new commitments, highlight progress and innovation, and advocate for countries, the private sector, and others to do more to get back on track in achieving a malaria-free world. INDIA LEADING THE WAY
Building On India’s Significant Progress
In 2018, Malaria No More formalized our partnership with the state of Odisha to innovate, document success, and develop a model for malaria elimination that other states can follow. As part of the program, we are proud to collaborate with global healthcare leader Abbott, who is providing financial and technical support, as well as 1 million rapid diagnostic tests to improve diagnosis, treatment and surveillance in Odisha. At the national level, we are working with the Indian Government to elevate malaria as a priority health issue and fulfill India’s plan to eliminate malaria by 2030.
ON THE GLOBAL STAGE
Global Leaders Commit $4.1 billion to Reduce Malaria by 50% by 2023
The 2018 London Malaria Summit, hosted by Malaria No More UK, brought together political, business, non-profit, scientific, and cultural leaders who pledged $4.1 billion in R&D and programmatic investments to energizing the malaria fight. 53 country leaders from across Commonwealth countries – which represent more than 50 percent of the global malaria burden – publicly committed to reduce malaria by half by 2023. If achieved, this commitment would prevent 350 million malaria cases and save an additional 650,000 lives from this preventable disease.

EMPOWERING LOCAL ADVOCATES
New Grassroots Effort Elevates Community Voices
Malaria No More joined 40 non-governmental organizations from across Francophone Africa and Asia to create the Civil Society Network for Malaria Elimination. United at the grassroots level, the group aims to have a transformative impact on the malaria fight. The network will advocate for political and resource commitments, and drive greater accountability at the local, regional and global levels to eliminate malaria. Malaria No More, led by our Africa Deputy Director Olivia Ngou, was chosen to serve as the Secretariat to drive forward the network’s activities. Read more.
SUSTAINING U.S. LEADERSHIP
US Commitments to the Global Malaria Fight Continue at Historic High
Despite a challenging political environment, MNM’s advocacy efforts contributed to the U.S. Congress’ decision to maintain critical U.S. investments to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria at $1.35 billion, and to the President’s Malaria Initiative at $755 million. These investments contribute to the US Government's vision of ending preventable child and maternal deaths and extreme poverty. Malaria No More recognized the United States’ continued leadership in the malaria fight by honoring USAID Administrator (and former MNM colleague) Mark Green and Senator Marco Rubio at our annual Champion’s Breakfast on Capitol Hill. We also hosted a welcome reception for the newly appointed U.S. Global Malaria Coordinator, Dr. Kenneth Staley.

2018 was a year of significant opportunity and adversity for the malaria campaign. The WHO’s 2018 World Malaria Report for the first time showed 46 countries with fewer than 10,000 cases, putting more than half of the malaria-affected world within striking distance to eliminate the disease. Yet, cases rose for a second year in 10 of the 11 highest burden countries.
In many ways, this moment is reminiscent of 2006, when Malaria No More (MNM) first galvanized the world at the White House Summit to tackle the malaria challenge. In 2018, the setting was the London Malaria Summit, where our MNM UK colleagues hosted Bill Gates, Prince Charles, and more than a dozen Heads of State from Africa and Asia to announce $4.1b in new funding commitments and an historic pledge by 53 countries to reduce the malaria by half in Commonwealth countries in the next five years.
Today, as in 2006, we need new strategies, new technologies, new partnerships, and expanded funding to achieve our ambitious goals, and Malaria No More is rising to the challenge. We added to the MNM Board entrepreneurial leaders who have built transformative media, technology, and medical businesses globally. We expanded our work and partnerships in India and Africa. And we welcomed visionary new leadership at partner institutions including the US President’s Malaria Initiative, The Global Fund, and the Malaria Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Even as we adapt our strategies, we remain committed to our founding vision—that anyone, anywhere dying from a mosquito bite is unacceptable. We thank you for your continued commitment to that vision.
