Dr. David Bowen, CEO of Malaria No More, will testify at a hearing of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health and Human Rights, "Fighting Malaria: Progress and Challenges." Thanks to U.S. government support, the world has seen remarkable advancements in the fight against malaria, including halving the number of malaria cases in over 40 countries and reducing deaths by over 20 percent in the last five years.
"I am honored to testify about the amazing strides we have made in the fight against malaria. Congress' bipartisan support for programs such as the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has saved lives around the world and is helping those in malaria-endemic areas help themselves. With the continued support of the U.S. government, in coordination with other governments, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations, we can end deaths from this preventable and treatable disease once and for all," Dr. Bowen said.
Dr. Bowen will join other expert witnesses including the Honorable Mark Green of the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, Dr. Dennis Schmatz of Medicines for Malaria Venture North America, Inc., Dr. Regina Rabinovich of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr. Roger Bate of the American Enterprise Institute, and Dr. Richard W. Steketee of the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health.
The Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health and Human Rights is chaired by Congressman Christopher H. Smith (R-NJ) with Ranking Member Donald M. Payne (D-NJ). The hearing "Fighting Malaria: Progress and Challenges" is an open hearing and will be held Monday, December 5, 2011 at 3pm in Room 2172 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
