Washington, DC, March 23, 2024 – Malaria No More CEO Martin Edlund issued the following statement upon the passage of the FY 2024 Congressional spending package:
In a highly constrained budget environment, Malaria No More welcomes a FY24 appropriations bill which includes $795 million for the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), $1.65 billion for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and $300 million for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
Throughout the past two decades, investments like these have saved 11.7 million lives and averted 2 billion cases of malaria. But in the face of rising challenges including antimicrobial resistance, the spread of the A. stephensi mosquito, and more frequent and extreme weather events expanding the range of malaria-carrying mosquitoes, we risk losing these historic gains and putting our goal of malaria eradication out of reach. We are grateful to our champions in Congress for their continued commitment to the malaria fight. They have proven, once again, that they understand the need for new tools and technologies – like next-generation mosquito nets and malaria vaccines – and that they see the critical role these programs play in building and sustaining broader health systems.
At the same time, we are concerned with the 5.6% topline reduction in the State and Foreign Operations bill and the 5% reduction in the global health account. These cuts affect critical programs that protect the world’s most vulnerable and enhance the United States’ standing and security in the world.
Malaria No More looks forward to working with Congress and the Administration to provide the highest possible funding for bilateral and multilateral malaria programs in FY25.
