Washington, DC, September 21, 2022– Malaria No More CEO Martin Edlund issued the following statement upon the announcement that the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria raised $14.25 billion in commitments at the Fund’s 7th replenishment conference:
This unprecedented $14.25 billion pledge for the Global Fund represents a peak moment of human generosity and commitment to securing the health and economic opportunity of the most vulnerable billion people on the planet. And it couldn’t be better timed. As the world recovers from COVID-19, this is the single most important moment in the Global Fund’s 20 year history to regain the initiative in the historic campaign to end malaria, TB, and HIV.
None of this would have been possible without the vital leadership of President Biden and his Administration, as host of this historic moment, and the steadfast support of our bipartisan champions in Congress who have already committed $2 billion for FY23. The United States has played a transformative role in the Global Fund since President George W. Bush provided the founding pledge. There is no better way to celebrate a legacy of bipartisan support and achievement – that has spanned two decades and saved more 50 than million lives – than with this commitment to the future.
At Malaria No More, we celebrate the Global Fund’s historic success, alongside its critical partner and ally, the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative. Today’s commitments provide a much-needed jolt to finish the job on malaria – and finally eradicate the world’s oldest and deadliest pandemic once and for all.
While this generous pledge hits a high water mark for the Global Fund - and represents a commitment above what the Fund achieved three years ago – we have to keep going. Failure to reach the full $18 billion target will “leave money on the table” from the U.S. intended pledge of $6 billion, and it will put the Global Fund’s goal of saving an additional 20 million lives at risk.
