Washington, D.C., September 18, 2019 —The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations released their Chairman’s mark for the FY 2020 State and Foreign Operations and related programs appropriations bill today. The bill includes increased funding for critical life-saving programs to end malaria.
The bill provides $1.56 billion for the Global Fund, a 15.6 percent increase above the Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 enacted level. The bill also makes clear the Senate’s intentions to maintain this increased financial support through FY2022, and that the U.S. should maintain its historic contribution of approximately 33% of total funding, both are critical to galvanizing global support ahead of the Global Fund’s 6th replenishment conference next month. For its 2020-2022 funding cycle, the Global Fund is seeking to raise at least $14 billion to save an additional 16 million lives from HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.
Recognizing the critical need for bed nets treated with new types of insecticides to combat insecticide resistance, the bill includes an additional $34 million in funding for the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), recommending a total of $789 million in funding for PMI in FY 2020 compared to the $755 million appropriated to PMI in FY 2019.

Malaria No More encourages conferees to allocate $789 million for PMI and $1.56 billion for the Global Fund in FY2020 in the final State and Foreign Operations appropriations bill.”
PMI and the Global Fund are among the most effective U.S. investments towards the U.S. government’s vision of ending extreme poverty and preventable maternal and child deaths worldwide. Since 2000, global efforts, led by U.S. leadership, investments, and innovation, have reduced malaria deaths by 60% and malaria cases by 37%, saving seven million lives and preventing more than one billion cases of the disease. In FY 2018, PMI protected more than 570 million people at risk of malaria.
