World Malaria Day

World Malaria Day

Friday, April 25 is World Malaria Day—a day to highlight the successes and challenges in the ongoing fight against malaria and raise awareness about this global killer.

Around the world, people are coming together to say that enough is enough. While over one million people, most of them children, die every year from this preventable and treatable disease, the world refuses to turn its back on the problem.

See below for some of the things the world is doing to call attention to World Malaria Day and find out how you can help to make a difference and save lives.

  • United Nations Event: The United Nations is hosting a summit of global health leaders to announce new initiatives and commitments to the global fight against malaria, hosted by the new UN Special Envoy for Malaria, Ray Chambers.
  • Congressional Malaria Caucus: In Washington, DC, Congressional leaders will announce a malaria caucus to bring malaria control issues to the forefront of the national agenda and promote legislation that works to end malaria deaths.
  • World Malaria Day in Zambia: Ministers of Health from Southern Africa, Princess Astrid of Belgium, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, and members of the Roll Back Malaria Zambezi Expedition will gather at Livingstone Falls in Zambia to highlight the expedition's theme: "Malaria: A Disease Without Borders".
  • Malaria No More Germany: Malaria No More's German partners celebrate World Malaria Day with a week of events in Potsdam, including a Music Against Malaria tribute concert on April 19th and a People Against Malaria event on April 25th—during which participants will work to create the largest human-made bed net!
  • The Buzz NYC: New York kids will take action against malaria in a day of educational games and creative activities to raise awareness and make a difference on a global scale on Global Youth Service Day (also April 25th).
  • Global Youth Service Day: Working in partnership with Youth Service America, Malaria No More has armed young people with the educational tools and resources to build peer and community awareness about malaria. This year, youth from across the country, and as far away as Canada and Nigeria, are rallying to the cause and raising donations for bed nets on behalf of Malaria No More. Here are just a few of the activities they've undertaken: Battle of the Bands, Penny wars, Community rallies, Stayin' Alive dances, School assemblies, and Dance, Dance Revolution video game competitions. www.malarianomore.org/stayinalive
  • MTV News: MTV will air a news segment on World Malaria Day to highlight a Stayin' Alive dance at YES Prep high school in Houston, TX. Stayin' Alive is Malaria No More's flagship grassroots movement focused on empowering American students to join the global fight against malaria through school dances and other events. See the segment on think.mtv.com on Friday, April 25th.
  • Nashville's Country Music Marathon (April 26th): Melinda's Backups, fans of former American Idol contestant Melinda Doolittle, will run in the marathon to raise funds for Malaria No More, already topping their goal of $5,000 raised. Melinda has worked closely with Malaria No More on malaria awareness. www.melindasbackups.org.

Malaria No More! Netherlands

The foundation Malaria No More! Netherlands, a partnership of the Netherlands Red Cross, AMREF Flying Doctors, the Fred Foundation, and other future partners in the Netherlands and Europe, has been launched to ignite a grassroots movement of individuals, civil society, the public sector and the corporate world in the Netherlands and beyond. The goal of the foundation is to transform the dysfunctional effects of malaria by raising funds in the Netherlands and allocating these through NGO's and local parties for an integral approach, whilst at the same time supporting primary health care more broadly in Africa. This includes the purchase and distribution of bed nets and the mobilization of more volunteers for education and training. Additionally, Malaria no More! NL aims at raising awareness regarding malaria, not only in the Netherlands but also throughout Europe and in African countries where malaria prevails.
