Malaria No More

Ugandan Bed Net Distribution

Taking the First Step: Turning donor dollars into nets.

Malaria No More teamed up with the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) and the Government of Uganda to distribute 580,000 long-lasting insecticide-treated nets to pregnant mothers, children under five and other vulnerable populations during April-May 2007. The campaign was part of a larger 2.4 million net distribution, which ultimately doubled household bed net ownership from 25% to over 50%.

Why Uganda?

The worldwide incidence of malaria is largely concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa where an estimated 90% of all malaria deaths occur each year. In few countries has the impact of malaria been more devastating than in Uganda, where 1 in 6 children die of the disease. Malaria No More's investment in the children of Uganda was based on a strategy to find distribution opportunities where the need is greatest. It's also based on PMI's sound assessment of Uganda's National Malaria Control Plan, which helps to ensure efficient and well managed distribution campaigns and adequate monitoring and evaluation.

Coming up—Madagascar Distribution Campaign

This fall, Malaria No More will be partnering with PMI, the American Red Cross, UNICEF and the Integrated Measles/Malaria Initiative on a campaign to distribute 1.4 million bed nets to at-risk children. While the east of the island and the Central Highlands have already benefited from net distribution and indoor residual spraying, respectively, and together have achieved control over malaria, a number of regions still remain at risk. The aim of the fall campaign is to achieve 100% coverage of children under the age of five in the targeted regions.

But we need your help!

While donations to date have provided a solid foundation for our efforts, we are still looking for additional funds to support our efforts and close the net gap. Please join us in support of our Madagascar campaign, and donate bed nets.
