Last year, American Idol helped to change the lives of millions of people through the world with Idol Gives Back, a two-night star-studded event that raised over $75 million for children and vulnerable people living in the U.S. and in Africa, including $17 million for bed nets to fight malaria. 60 million viewers were educated about the malaria crisis and learned what they can do to help.
One of the beneficiaries of this outpouring of generosity was Malaria No More, which used the funds to provide bed nets to children and pregnant mothers living in malaria-endemic areas. The world has known how to beat malaria for decades, yet it continues to kill more African children than any other disease, claiming nearly one million lives per year.
Thanks to funds raised from Idol Gives Back, Malaria No More has provided bed nets to protect more than a million mothers and children from malaria in Angola, Mali, Madagascar, Uganda, and Zambia.
Malaria No More Funds, Country-by-Country
Angola 2008:
In the coming months, 287,000 bed nets will be provided through routine distribution from clinics to protect children and pregnant mothers from malaria using Idol funds
Mali December, 2007:
Bed nets from Idol were part of a national integrated measles-malaria campaign that distributed 2.2 million bed nets, covering 95% of all children under five in Mali
Madagascar October, 2007:
Idol funds played an integral part in a massive national mother and child health campaign, the largest ever conducted in Madagascar, by supporting the distribution of 110,000 bed nets
Uganda May-September, 2007:
Idol supported the purchase of 296,000 bed nets distributed across 27 districts, with full coverage of children under five and pregnant women achieved in 12 districts
Zambia May–October, 2007:
Idol funds provided 41,000 bed nets for people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, who are at extremely high risk of malaria, reaching 80% coverage of targeted beneficiaries
Thanks to the overwhelming support of the public and donations from the corporate sector, Idol Gives Back proved that a small gift like a bed net can change the life of a child for the better. This year's Idol Gives Back program, to air on April 9, 2008, will once again provide life-saving bed nets to protect people in Africa from the danger of malaria.
