How do you distribute bed nets?
We work with our partners, UNICEF, the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI), and the American Red Cross, to procure and distribute bed nets and to educate families on their proper use. All three organizations have expertise in malaria and in implementing malaria interventions.

Why bed nets? What kind of bed nets?
Bed nets are an effective, inexpensive and available tool in malaria prevention. Lasting for up to five years, long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets (LLINs) work by creating a protective barrier against mosquitoes at night, when the vast majority of transmissions occur. The African malaria mosquitoes generally bite late at night or early morning, between 10pm and 4am. A net treated with special insecticides offers about twice the protection of an untreated net, and through its repellency, can even protect other people in the room outside the net. When enough people (about 70 percent) sleep under LLINs, entire communities, even houses without an LLIN, can be made safer.
We work with our partners to distribute World Health Organization-approved, long-lasting, insecticide-treated bed nets that are effective for up to five years and do not require re-treatment.

Do you only do work in Africa? Why?
MNM is focused on fighting malaria in Africa where 90% of malaria-related deaths occur. While malaria does impact other regions of the world, it is most destructive to the African continent where over 1 million people die a year of malaria and an estimated $12 billion of economic output is lost as a result of the disease.

What is Malaria No More's position on spraying?
MNM relies on the guidelines and regulations of African nations regarding what technologies are and are not allowed or encouraged for use in their states. Recognizing the importance of local expertise and the autonomy of African nations, we seek to ensure countries are empowered in their decisions regarding the best technologies their malaria control needs and therefore abide by their guidelines. For an example of how spraying, and specifically Indoor Residual Spraying(IRS), supports a comprehensive malaria control plan, read the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) guide (PDF) on prevention and control of malaria in Africa

How do you ensure that the nets are used properly and not sold?
MNM partners with UNICEF and the American Red Cross to distribute bed nets and provide education on their proper use that, together, dramatically reduce the misuse and sale of nets. With education about the importance, impact and proper usage of the bed net, recipient families are far more likely to use and value the nets properly, hanging them in their homes and protecting their families.
