The People Have Spoken and the Winner is…African Families

January 6th, 2010 | Posted by emily

ashton at awardsWow.

So I’m sitting at home, watching the People’s Choice Awards after a long day fighting the malaria fight in the MNM offices, when Ashton Kutcher (or @aplusk as his Twitter following knows him) wins the award for Favorite Web Celebrity.

Awesome! Ashton and the Twitter community have been incredibly generous to Malaria No More and we’re psyched to be deploying the Twitter Nets in Senegal. Great to see that he’s getting the recognition he deserves…

…but then he takes it a step further by mentioning Malaria No More to the whole crowd, including one of our fearless leaders, MNM co-founder Ray Chambers.

That’s taking things to a whole new level, @aplusk and Katalyst! Thanks for the shout-out and be sure to stay tuned in the coming weeks so we can show you exactly how Twitter is having impact and saving lives on-the-ground in Africa.

White Party White Bracelets!

Check out Diddy's Bracelet!

Malaria No More had a great time at Sean Combs’ White Party this weekend in Beverly Hills! Sean Combs, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore and so many others helped Celebrate Life this July 4th weekend by standing together against malaria!

Throughout the day, people stopped by the Malaria No More cabana to learn about malaria and what they could do to help. To show their dedication, many people sported a white net bracelet (a strip of white netting like the nets used to protect against malaria in Africa, tied around the wrist) and encouraged friends and fellow party-goers to join them in supporting Malaria No More.

Missed the White Party? There’s still time to get in on the action! This week only, Malaria No More is sending white net bracelets to everyone who donates a $10 mosquito net online. Save a life AND be part of the White Party!

Editor’s Note: Okay, folks—just want to make sure we’re clear. What are these bracelets, exactly? They’re strips of white netting and they definitely make a statement…but think of them more as a summer fling than as an enduring fashion item. While the nets that we send to Africa are made of long-lasting, durable (and insecticide-treated) netting, these are a fun, added bonus to the best gift of all—helping a family in Africa protect itself with a REAL mosquito net.

Be even more in fashion with a limited-edition Celebrate Life: End Malaria t-shirt from Sean John!

Check out our photo gallery from the White Party to see how ending malaria is the best way to Celebrate Life!

Celebrate Life: End Malaria at the White Party

June 30th, 2009 | Posted by emily

_MG_7746Sean Combs (aka P. Diddy) is bringing his fashion sense to the race to end malaria deaths!

Combs is co-hosting his annual White Party with MNM supporter Ashton Kutcher and Malaria No More in Los Angeles on July 4th. To raise awareness about malaria and what the world is doing to end it, his Sean John fashion label has designed a limited-edition “Celebrate Life: End Malaria” t-shirt to benefit Malaria No More.

The sale of every “Celebrate Life: End Malaria” t-shirt will send TWO life-saving mosquito nets to help families in Africa protect themselves from malaria.

The Sean John flagship store in Manhattan is decorated with mosquito nets and a special “Celebrate Life: End Malaria” window display now through July 4th. Check out our photo slideshow from the t-shirt launch in New York!

MNM is also able to offer 25% off of all full-price merchandise now through July 4th at the Sean John store. Print out this coupon for your discount and an additional donation of 10% of all coupon sales!

Get your Sean John t-shirt and help families in Africa Celebrate Life… and show the world that fighting malaria is always in fashion!

Twitter Donation Round-Up!

April 17th, 2009 | Posted by emily

Whew! The Twitterverse has been exploding with malaria (not in a bad way) and many people have pledged to donate mosquito nets to fight malaria in Africa. That includes hundreds of tweets commiting to a single net donation to Malaria No More (thank you!!) and some very generous pledges from others.

Take a look below for a quick synopsis of what’s been going on:

  • Ashton Kutcher—he who started all this excitement—and his wife Demi Moore pledged 10,000 nets to Malaria No More. Ashton threw down with this online video challenge to CNN.
  • CNN took up the challenge and pledged to match Ashton’s gift of 10,000 nets
  • Oprah joined the action with one of her first Tweets in a message to Demi: “@mrskutcher count me in for 20 thousand nets”
  • Ryan Seacrest made his mark on Twitter: “just spoke to larry king @CNNbrk is donating 10,000 mosquito nets. i will too”
  • Electronic Arts sweetened the deal by promising 5,000 mosquito nets in the name of the person who put Ashton over the million mark

Incredible! And who knows how much further we can go? Make your mark by raising awareness on Twitter for World Malaria Day and April 25th! Thanks for your support!

Insecticide-”tweeted”nets and other news a little birdie told me…

“Every 30 seconds a child dies from Malaria. Nets save lives. Support World Malaria Day”

Thanks to a certain super-twitter (Ashton Kutcher), this “tweet” reverberated in the online twitter community and raised tons of awareness for World Malaria Day and the life-saving potential of insecticide-treated bed nets. (Follow Malaria No More at www.twitter.com/MalariaNoMore)

Speaking of good-hearted celebs, Madonna has been promoting her organization’s documentary film, I AM BECAUSE WE ARE, that portrays the extraordinary challenges faced by Malawian children every day. The film will be featured on hulu.com for six weeks, so be sure to check it out. Malaria No More is featured on the website as a partner in helping Malawian orphans have an opportunity to overcome their overwhelming circumstances.

A little birdie also tells me that American Idol star Brooke White is such an active supporter of Malaria No More…that she even got her mom into it! Brooke’s mom suggested a charitable spin on Casual Fridays at the office—her colleagues were invited to wear jeans in return for a small donation to Malaria No More. That’s some creative fundraising!

Talk about using star power!!
