Presiden’t Day – Guess Who Had Malaria?
February 12th, 2010 | Posted by Erica
President’s Day is Monday. While celebrating your day off, remember the eight U.S. presidents that had malaria.
That’s right, a number of U.S. Presidents suffered from malaria before it was eradicated from the States in 1951. See below for a brief history of those we affectionately call The Plasmodium Presidents:
- President George Washington developed his first bout with malaria in 1749 at age 17?
- President James Monroe caught malaria while visiting a swampy area along the Mississippi in 1785?
- President Andrew Jackson is thought to have contracted malaria in Florida swamps during the Seminole campaigns of 1818-1821?
- President Abraham Lincoln had periodic bouts of malaria when growing up?
- President Ulysses S. Grant had malaria throughout the 1850′s?
- President James A. Garfield developed malaria in 1848 in Ohio at age 16?
- President Theodore Roosevelt acquired malaria during a visit to Brazil in 1914?
- President John F. Kennedy acquired malaria during World War II, about 1943?
